What A Background Check Includes

Background checks are essentially checks on the past history of a person. Different groups and different people will usually be interested about disparate things when it comes to the history of a certain person. What a background check includes, of course, will significantly change depending on the interest of the person or of the group.

What a background check includes will be reflective of what the person or group running a background check wants to know. If it contains criminal records, perhaps that person or group wants to assess trustworthiness or acceptable risk for hiring. When a background check includes data on academic standing academic, maybe intelligence or competence in certain fields is what is being looked for.

A background check includes whatever the person or group think is relevant for their interest in the person. If a background check includes all the data and records that there could possible be, that would indicate a very real interest on the person.

Today, the usual comprehensive background check could be quite comprehensive if need be and cover a whole spectrum of thing, info, and tidbits about a person, from academic history to hobbies and what have you. This is possible due to records being encoded in computer databases and the fact that many of those databases are now linked to each other, allowing for fast accessing of all kinds of data.

In the age before the widespread use of computer networks and computer databases, conducting a comprehensive background check was often difficult due to the fact that in many cases, you had to physically go to whatever place that has the filing cabinet containing the information you need and make a request for it this will often take a lot of time and to make a background checks really comprehensive, you had to go to a lot of places containing a lot of filing cabinets, often containing information that was not properly filed. As one could guess, this was very time consuming and expensive in terms of effort and resources. Thus when a background check was desired, only relevant information was sought.

The same is actually true today; even with the relative ease a comprehensive check could be made. This is to reduce the time spent wading through useless information on any given background check.

For employment, a typical background check includes criminal records, employment history, volunteer work history, addresses, social security numbers, academic records, medical records, commendations, special classes attended, and descriptions of relevant unique skills. Different people and different groups will require different levels of thoroughness depending on their needs and consequently, what a background check includes will often be different for many cases.

Whatever is sought or contained in a background check, one thing is to be considered. Background checks are but a way to understand people and a way to keep them honest when it comes to resumes. Whatever the contents, when someone runs a background check on you, the one making the check is usually trying to make this clear: he wants to make sure you can be trusted.
